I grew up in Oregon. My family would go camping on the coast every summer, and my favorite part of each trip was visiting the ports and walking the docks—seeing the seals and sea lions bobbing in the water, keeping a weathered eye on me as I leaned over the edge of the dock fascinated by all of the interesting sea creatures living in that mysterious underwater community. Fishermen would hastily walk past me to and from their boats as I poked sea anemones. I was always curious what that lifestyle was like—fishing and living on a boat at sea. My curiosity grew, and grew, and grew. I craved that adventure of going out to sea and exploring the unknown. It wasn’t a fishing job that would fulfill my curiosity, however, but science!

Wave of Anticipation: I stood on the dock and waved to my Drone as the F/V Pinnacle loaded the last of their pots before we headed out for the Bristol Bay red king crab season, Fall 2024. photo credit: Cory Lescher
